I have several Apple Machines as well as PCs suitable to experiment with Yellow box and Rhapsody also known as OS X Server 1.0 or OS X Server 1.2 or OS X Server 1.2v3 I have gotten very limited information on Google and am hoping to get better information here. I have had Success installing 10.5.8 on my hp dv6246us it works practically flawless I have installed Snow leopard but it wasn't Stable on my hp, but have Snow leopard Server running on Mac Mini first Duo Core. I am currently more interested in Rhapsody or Yellow Box didn't want to go off topic but thought it pertinent to give you an idea of my present ability and limitations.

I'm also going to refer you to this weblink:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ta28250

This will show you what Mac models supported what versions of shipped Rhapsody (1.0 - 1.2v3)

I also want to refer you to this OS X 1.2v3 readme file as it warns of issues such as USB support, SCSI, etc.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38977

Hopefully it will help in your quest to run Rhapsody. I've found the best machine I could throw 1.2v3 at was a PowerMac G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) model or an original eMac.

Even though the PowerBooks were officially unsupported for Rhapsody, I know certain models of PM G3 (the PDQ and Lombard specifically) would work with it...remember...Apple's sales staff at the time had to demo it to customers.

HI all - I am new here, it's my first post! Whoo, happy birthday!

Basically, blackhole's link is the official word.

Your best chances for success are to choose hardware which was current when the OS was being worked on. Firstly, no 68k or X86 Macs - these systems were developed on PowerPC (PPC) machines with a PCI bus. Almost any G3 or early G4 Mac should work. You might get some earlier, unsupported "beige" Macs to work, like the 8600 and 9600.

For laptops your choices will be a bit more limited, but some of them do work. I have Mac OS X Server 1.2 running on a Wallstreet G3 PowerBook with no problems. The trick is that in the install process you will get to a window that explains that you are attempting install to an unsupported machine... after this box pops up, go up to the menu bar at the top-left of the monitor, and the pulldown menu will then have a new selection: to go ahead and install on your unsupported hardware. So far as I know it works on all the black G3 PowerBooks.

And finally, what determines if it will work is what hardware you have drivers for. The drivers are kext files (KErnel eXTention), so a list of what kexts should clue you in on chipsets, peripherals, etc. Good luck!

I'll second Metrophage as well but note that the beige G3 is supported per the article listed below and my experience, though my experience also tells me that with early Mac OS X builds (which I'm going to guess applies to Rhapsody as well...though it is truly different), that you have to be careful how you partition the hard drive on Beige G3s and Mac OS X...I know with 10.0 - 10.2, that you have to install onto the first partition of no more than 8 GB in size or it doesn't work right. It only applies to beiges though.

Finally as to laptops...I figured it would work on a Wallstreet...has anyone had success loading OS X Server 1.2v3 on a Lombard though. In Apple-speak, that would be the PowerBook G3 (Bronze Keyboard) not to be confused with the PowerBook (FireWire). I know that likely won't work.

Would 1.2 or 1.2v3 run on the 1Ghz Titanium PowerBook G4? The laptop shouldn't be too different except for the G4 processor. I'm not sure of this but I may have read some pre-Aqua OSX running on the mirrored-drive doors Powermac G4 Whig was shipped after the intro of TiBooks.
