Embarrassing for which party?
IMO if Apple releases more updates with more new functionality, they care more about their users than MS. But I know there will always be people who will say that more upgrades mean more bugs to be fixed, so if there are no upgrades the software is bugless. IMO stupid thinking.

Embarrassing for Microsoft. In the time that it's taken Microsoft to almost kind of sort of release one update (NoDo, which still isn't available for anything but unbranded phones), Apple has released six updates, two of those being major feature oriented releases (three major releases if you count 4.2.5, as it brought both Hotspot Sharing support as well as CDMA support to the OS).

Apple generally has more frequent updates than Microsoft for both Mac OS and iOS. Long ago they said they were going to go to a 6 month alternating cycle of major and minor updates and then switched to a "OS X per year" cycle which has been kinda broken due to the delay of Leopard's release.
That said, the vast majority of updates are simply bug fixes, etc. If I recall, Microsoft releases patches to Windows every tuesday (mostly security fixes)?

Not every Tuesday, but ca. every fourth Tuesday (they release patches on 2nd Tuesday of every month with the exception being patches for very dangerous security flaws).

What's so wrong about the current IE Mobile? I've read it's based on IE7/8 so it doesn't support many standards, but is really fast, faster than Android browser, similar to Safari Mobile, in terms of speed OC. And you're going to have to wait a few more months for IE9...

its not the speed, thats not too bad. It is indeed the standards, they are poor. Very poor. nothing quite renders correctly (including this site). scores a "massive" 5 points on the Acid 3 test lol
Also it needs an Ebuddy type app, the current Windows Live messenger application is a joke. (And Ihave yet to get the "nodo" update for it (as its down to orange UK now)

It's quite strange that sites render poorly, since IE7 and IE8 are massively used worldwide. Heck, most sites work even with IE6. Acid3 score isn't any surprise, considering what IE Mobile is based on, but it doesn't matter. Just about every website should work properly with IE7, and so should with IE Mobile.

yeah i know, it makes some writing on the page massive for no apparent reason meaning nothing quite lines up right.

But isn't Opera Mobile available for WP7? I've used Opera Mobile for a long time (betas of 10 on WM, then the final version, now 11 on Nokia N900) and it's a great browser. I'd recommend it to everyone. The only issue I have with it is that it doesn't support Flash Player (MicroB and Firefox do), but there is no Flash Player for WP7, so it doesn't matter anyway.

Opera mobile works on windows mobile 6.5, but not Windows phone 7. The only thing you can get is the opera link bookmarks in an app. (like the firefox one for iphone)

Well then, I think those are the things that every early adopter of OS must bear in mind when deciding to become one. Neither iOS was perfect at the beginning, nor was Android. Considering that WP7 is a do-or-die situation for MS (in smartphone market), I think they'll at least try to constantly improve it.

But that's the problem - they haven't been. This "NoDo" update will be Microsoft's first update in five months. In a time where catching up was everything, Microsoft let themselves get more and more burried by the competition. While Apple and Google have been busy releasing update after update, Microsoft has been stuck with absolutely nothing to show for far too long. They may be constantly improving WP7 internally, but it's just taking too long to get into the hands of the consumers.

I think the way iOS updates are managed is far better than the update system in windows (any version) as there is the choice to upgrade each time you plug the pad or phone into the main computer. Win tends to background upgrade, then you find all the glitches etc. iOs you can see what others experience and then decide whether to upgrade when they have been ironed out. Just an opinion.

Anyone find this update made the iPod slower? My 4G is really slower than it was on 4.2.1. bubo - I see your point. Because for the people who depend on jailbreak/unlocks and it updated. They would not be happy.
