Hello all,

I've recently got sick of people and their excessive signature sizes and advertising, so I've now reduced the signatures from 2048 characters to 256 characters. You were all warned several times, now you've lost the privilege of large signatures and links.

Anyone with a large signature or links in their signature should remove them immediately or have them removed for you.

The signature rules have also been amended to suit this, and are in bold:

Quote:
Signatures
- You may not use signatures exceeding the dimensions of 600x150 pixels (width/height) and more than 100KB in file size. This also includes the combined dimensions and filesize of multiple images.
- You may not use signatures that include information or format that violates any other rule.
- You may not use more than 2 text lines in the signature, and it must not upset the layout of the website. If combined with an image, text lines are limited to 1. Use proper text color and font sizes.
- You may use BBCode in your signatures as long as they follow the same rules as posts. Links to your personal twitter/facebook etc are allowed.
- You may not use any dead links or inappropriate contents containing (but not limited to) racist, sexual, political or religious remarks.
- You may not advertise in your signature. Keep this for your profile link. You may ask people to visit your site by clicking on your profile link.

Am I the only person who finds this a little silly? Every single other forum I've ever been on has allowed links in a signature, every last one. What happened that made it come to this, may I ask?

I agree with the shrinking. Signatures like bc21's are excessively wrong, and one person who I asked to shrink a while back argued back on me.

Links, sorry Andy but kneejerk reaction here, it's a bit excessive. Yes to everything else but you should be allowed links (i.e click my image, you go to my twitter page) (at the moment).

Don't do what the government did and implement something which is of little use and more inconvenience (yes I mean the full body scanners)

Seriously. It's ridiculous that, according to the new rules, I can't link to my Twitter page or my gamertag status. Was that really hurting anybody?

And aLinux, unless we all really do live in Nazi Germany, we're free to debate the little things. Sorry.

People advertising endless crap in their signatures and many complaints about the length of them from over a dozen users in the last 2 months. If you want to advertise your site, use your profile WWW link.

I am also sick of people linking to pointless petitions and blogs, and other beta sites that are never going to take off. I'm not the only one sick of this, believe me. BA isn't here to advertise other people's stuff for free. If you want advertising pay me £5/month and I'll let you have a text or image banner on the site...

And no, you can't have large text. Standard size only. That's another thing I have changed.

OK, I'll allow ONE up to 5 links for things like personal twitter/facebook accounts.

Thanks Andy. That's fair.

OK from that viewpoint I could understand why no links. The max 5 links for personal uses not rival forums etc is good enough.

I must say, I had been getting sick of all those links to "OSBG" and similar...those sites do seem to be the root of a lot of the flaming problems that there have been.

Just out of curiosity, does anybody have an issue with me advertising my personal site? It's not a competitor to this site in any way, nor is it even a forum. :\

I never understood why people need to have a very large sig at all ... a small one should do it ;)

My signature was a personal biography and didn't have any links in it...is it still too long? It depends on how big the browser is if it takes up three lines or not. lol. Either way, it uses small text.

All i've used my signature for has been to make it an easy link to my current projects... (I don't like it when people spam with mass ammounts of images to other sites)
I do like the custom filter options on AdBlockPlus, it helped me remove alot of those large siggy's that were around for a while.

Are we allowed an empty line inbetween our two lines of text?

As long as it's reasonable, we don't have an issue.

If it's ridiculous, then we have an issue :?

Yes, it provides too many lulz, which, in large doses, can be unhealthy.

Finally no more half page signatures!

I must say I have been guilty of using larger signatures, but I am glad about the rule change. It kind of sucks when the signatures take up more room on the page than the content does.

As you can see I have no problem with this change (lol!). I think for viewing ease it makes everything simpler. I'd rather not scroll through a bunch of text/images while reading (although having sigs on makes it simple to see who is posting as I scroll through).

Perhaps it would have been less contentious if users were reminded that, if they fond them offensive, they could, like I have done, turm them off in their CPs?
