On our craigslist, no. There are some Macs out on there but those are the new hipster Macs. See, I live in a college town so if it's not the latest it doesn't exist here.
Occasionally I can find some old computers, but not very often.

A little pricy for an old iMac G3. It is lacking firewire, video out, and an Airport slot. For $50 on craigslist I am sure you can get a better model.

You could do a fresh install on them and donate them to the old folks home, poor family, or a registered charity that uses them rather then just selling them.

I have been doing that for about 8 months now with people giving away a whole labs worth of iMac G3s. Its great to be able to help others out.

Just 1 idea though.

Another idea is to connect one machine to your TV (if you have one), buy a 3$ remote on ebay, and use it to watch TV/DVDs/AVI.

Random_User thats highly unlikely, seeing as the year would have been around 1996. I don't recall anyone writing some Mac OS file system drivers for NT4. Jman - A misread floppy cannot crash the Windows NT Kernel, the kernel is too stable for a bad floppy to have any effect.

this is what i meant , some kind of unlucky filesystem bug with the floppy , could cause that terminal to crash , but there would require quite a bit of circomstance even from there to actually bring down the whole network , just thinking possibilities

I don't think I will sell any of them- unless it's the Dell Inspiron 8000 or Toshiba Satellite a105. Maybe i'd make a total of 50 bucks for the two of them, considering ones old and another is new but sound doesnt work.

Seeing as the floppy can't be read by NT4, as it was formatted using a Mac format, you can't load a network crashing script from it.

Not necessarily. If drivers for the file system that the floppy disk is formatted with are installed on the computer, then it's possible to load a network-crashing script from it.

I have WAY to many computers in my room.

Out of them all, I have:

Dell Dimension 4300 (Dad's Old, but still works) 384 MB 120 GB HD
Dell Inspiron 8000 (found in trash, works great) 512 MB 60 GB HD
Dell Inspiron 8200 (my old laptop, works great with XP) 512 MB 120 GB HD
Dell Studio 1555 (New laptop, used all the time) 2 GB 500 GB HD
iMac G4 (got from grandma's friend, works great up to 10.4) 256 MB 80 GB HD
Toshiba Satellite a105 (no harddrive, sound wont work) 512 MB n/a

I have no idea what to use them all (except the 1555) for. I mean the 8000 has a 16 MB graphics card and the 8200 has a 32/64 MB one, and the 4300 has no monitor at the moment, and the iMac is ot hooked up to the internet (right now) so the only ones online are the 1555 and 8200. Same with the toshiba ., the mac is great with music, but I have no idea what to use for backup, music, movies, betas, etc..

So basically this is what's happening:

Menu 1 gives you the opportunity to name a folder located at C:\
Menu 2 gives you the opportunity to choose what volume to scan
Menu 3 is just for fun, eg. dir the backup folder
Menu 4 just opens the backup folder with explorer
Menu 5 list currently extensions written in the extensions.txt file
Menu 6 grants you the opportunity to add more extensions
Menu 7 starts scanning the volume for files with the specific extensions and then copy them to the backup folder.
Menu 8 allows you to upload them to a server
Menu 9 opens the backup folder located at the server

And that was that.

Ontopic: You can extract separate resources and modify them the same way:
1. Open all imgs in Photoshop
2. Ctrl-U - Enter Values; Save, Close
3. Next
4. Ctrl-U - Enter the same values as before etc; Save, Close
5. ...

And you will get a good animation.

I recommend Chameleon, very efficient loader and allows to boot OSX with parameters you specify, such as video options etc. It also worked for a Windows XP/iPC 10.5.6 dualboot

I went to a computer store today and saw an Indigo flavored G3 on the sales floor for $50 USD.
It is a slot-loading system with the audio, modem, network and USB ports but no Firewire.
I didn't get the serial number off the machine otherwise I wouldn't be asking this question: Does anyone know what the CPU speed is on this G3? My (in)famous 5-second google search didn't turn up anything other than a few Apple support links.

10.2 was only compiled for PowerPC I believe.
Every version of mac os X was compiled to work on Intel processors.

By changing the iBoot Nvidia disc for an iBoot Supported disc and tinkering about with the BIOS, I finally managed to install Snow Leopard on my PC, however I have to use the iBoot Supported disc every time I want to enter Snow Leopard because if I use MultiBeast (which I installed) to boot, the CPU halts and my computer shuts off. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Reinstall without MultiBeast. (I use Chameleon)

I have to say, this suggestion is good and bad. It would be helpful as it helps sort files better, but some folders will end up with like 1 item, making it kind of pointless. But with filename sorting, it's kind of pointless.

You are right. People really need to search before they post such useless questions. I have to say, usually it's easier to google it instead of make a topic and wait hours for replies.

But like all search engines, it isn't always easy to find what you need.

currently yes but in the past was google and the other searchengine really good. every two finds today are advertisements for an, for you unknown, product!

I don't usually find advertisements, but when I'm searching up a complicated/rare problem, I usually can't find the answer I need. It's really annoying me!

1. Yes, you can even run OS 9 application on top of OS X just as long as you configure Classic and have an OS 9 System Folder on the Hard Drive. OS 9 may or may not be installed depending on when the model was manufactured.
2. You have to download it. I think the latest release of Safari that will run on 10.2 is 3.0.4 or maybe 4.0.
3. Try Ctrl-Click or a PC Mouse.
4. It should show it at the top if you have it at Classic (OS 9 like Finder view) or click Macintosh HD and go to Finder > Get Info.
5. Your OS 9 desktop should be there if OS 9 is installed.

Exactly what I thought. A coincidence.

But soulman has a point. Unless there's some sorta of crash thingy on the floppy, it shouldn't crash a whole network.

Mac OS 8 (Copland)

I had tried it on a NUBUS mac.
Its just very difficult to intall,runs has almst no native software,the kernel has preemptive multitasking but not the GUI.
It does not run on 604E cpus.

Apple gave 2 builds out only for driver development because it crashes often.
I dont know of any success running it in a emulator.

That managment knew no other way than makin the next OS from FreeBSD and Nextstep.

Yeah, I know, but last time I checked the zx6000 was worth $1000 - not exactly cheap to run a bare operating system (is there any software for the IA64 Windows? And drivers?). The reference workstations that all OEMs built are cheaper, but they also contain the slow Merced 733 MHz CPU.

You could host a website, FTP Server or something similar, using the appropriate software. You could also use it to test different betas on, like I did with my P2 until it bit the dust.

indeed, Mac OS has something against PC SATA. I think some versions of OSX86 have SATA support but you need to check on the OSX86 Wiki.

It's impossible that Neonsonicboy's problem is in conductive thermal paste. The processor had been working before.

Well in NT you can't drag a drive to the recycle bin, so all I can think is he just dragged it to a script, near the recycle bin, which would open the script. The script may have brought the network down. Otherwise, this story is false

I'm trying to install a retail copy of Snow Leopard on my PC using iBoot and I keep getting stuck at the infamous 'Still Waiting For Root Device' message. Here's my specs:

MSI X58 Pro
Intel Core i7 920

SATA Hard Drive (x2)
SATA DVD Rewriter

Does anyone know how to fix this error? I've seen reports of success with this setup before.

It is usually to do with SATA Hardware, try and configure your bios to emulate IDE , and mabi try a different non SATA cd drive,
for me , i installed to a external USB drive that didn't use a sata controller , and it worked

Yes, but there isn't a animation so I can't record something.

I would make a .gif for you if I could find a scrolling marquee in Windows 7 that would stay up long enough for me to align CamStudio to it and record it. Most marquees are gone within a few seconds. I dont even get enough time to line up the record area. And using this method their is artifacting on the video, slight but noticeable.

Microsoft´s upcoming operating system will be named Windows 8, I think. The RC probably will be released in the middle/late 2011 or in the begining of 2012. I will download the RC/beta as soon as it gets released to see if Windows 8 is worth buying.

10.2 won't work on any x86 machine/emulator/visualizer as it was only compiled for PowerPC I believe.
You'll have to buy a Mac or use PearPC to use it.

I did something like this when I was very young, it wasn't an NT machine, but an Acorn one (taken from a skip outside the school opposite me). I remember dragging the main drive to the trash and the machine stopped working. We got rid of it after that, since it would no longer boot.

You select between OS 9 and OS X by holding the Option-key (Alt) when starting up the iMac. There's also a Startup Disc setting in OS X System Preferences and a similar Control Panel in OS 9 where you can set the default boot OS.

You can, if you are clever enough, set c: drive to be an ordinary drive, not a boot or system drive. I had a laptop with only P: and Q: drives (no c:), so c: was the usual drive for removable USBs.

I never heard of deleting drives by the recycler, though.

Yea, normally by leaving flash drives plugged in during the install will set the C:\ as something other than the windows drive

OS9 - Should be an application called Classic, if not you can install it from the install disk. You can open a classic app to start it as well. It will run providing it does not have Leopard.
Safari - < 10.3 has IE I think, but 10.3 shipped with it or something.
Hard disk space - Or use Cmd+I, that is Get Info, same as Properties, works on any file.

But it's the OS limitation you are discussing. Almost all processors sold today have PAE, which extends the Memory addressing, up to 52-bit (Depending on the implementation).

Still, I'd agree it was the right decision for desktop OSes to limit to 32-bit addressing. PAE does have a (very small) performance hit, but more importantly, it'd extend the life of x86 processors, and that's just a headache for everyone.

No. The amp will only supply what it can, and it won't fry it unless it's a cheap no-name brand. It will have safety cut-out features to stop that happening if it's a good brand.

I have 50w speakers but a 40w head unit, no such problems here yet. It gets hot, but its a Mutant head unit so it's good quality.

Ok the sub is a kicker and the amp is a Hifonics they both are good brands. I just wanted to know thanks for the information.

The images are stretch to a size defined in the program and the indeterminate overlay is moved by GDI. You'd have to do it manually. Or record it.

Windows ME by far! Running Winver on my windows ME box causes the machine to power off... I don't think that is normal, do you?

I have an external 500GB WD HDD, a 40GB Sata Toshiba HDD in the laptop, a seagate 40GB HDD in the PowerMac G4, and 80GB WD Caviar HDD in the eMac G4, a Hitachi deskstar 80GB and a Seagate 40GB U6 series in the P4. There's a 10GB Quantum Fireball sitting all alone, waiting to be used

Well, Jman, in my opinion, all well and good using linux, but stop trying to convert people! Seriously, every post seems to mention linux being the greatest thing since sliced bread... Let the users use what they want to use! We don't care what other people use on their computers! Seriously, use what you want and get over it!

Anyway, the network may have just crashed, I highly doubt dragging c: to the recycle bin would do anything.

As already said, the RAR:s already have built in recovery data, so if the archive is broken you can repair it yourself. So there is no need for any separate md5 hashes.

But please report any broken archives so we can repair it on the server.

Narbacular Drop (Portal Proto)

Surprised nobody's posted this before... I suppose this is a hazy grey-area type of beta.
Anyway, a very interesting look into the very first incarnation of Portal. Originally, a group of Digipen students designed a game called Narbacular Drop as their final assessment. The whole team (calling themselves Nuclear Monkey Software) was eventually hired by Valve, after some execs saw NB in action. The rest is history.

Interestingly, Nuclear Monkey still has a website up (albeit dead since June 2008). It contains some nice additional files (concept art, a level editor, speed runs, etc.)

unlike some i like to maintain my privacy at school so if that means setting up a persistant configuration (techically it is a live USB) with the schools network preconfigured and a shh tunnel to back home , then i am happy to do that
you see hounsell , linux works for me , the schools computers take 10 minutes to boot to a usable state (they use bitdefender , no wonder) , i do most of the schools it administration for them ( in a secondary school of 100 it isn't always practical to call in the school it specialist from 40 miles away)if it doesn't work for you then sobeit , it doesn't

ps : i live in rural france so nobody (except my english friend who also uses linux) knows [INSERT WORD OF YOUR CHOICE HERE] about computers

i meant reading the floppy in the first place , ubuntu (thats my fav flavor of linux) reads practically every filesystem under the sun

well ... stupid sysadmins could have messed up the system ,at my school one of the computers had admin access ,notably always the one i used , i am not sure about this but if a admin dragged a network drive into the recycle bin containing the currently running profile , could it crash the system ? ,

The RAR files have recovery records (if that's the right name) at 5% (if that's the right percentage, maybe 10). But yes redundancy exist already.

I know someone over IRC who did this under Windows NT 4 at his school, when he was pretty young:

He takes the Mac formatted floppy and tries to read it on the PC
Of course, since NT 4 can only understand FAT and NTFS formats it doesn't work.
He gets angry and drags the C: drive to the recycle bin
The whole school network crashes

So does anyone know why this happened?

You could try recording the part of the screen with something like Camstudio. Then use a program to convert the .swf or .avi video to .gif file. SUPER will do just that and is also free.

Oh, I'm sorry, I noticed it just now.. Technically, HeinanOS Milestone 2 is ready, and already been compiled, but right now I'm doing it final testing to make sure its quality is high enough for end-users usage. Please be patient, as I'm trying to create something that is both stable, and exciting enough to make end-users use it. Anyway, I'm planning to release it during the coming days, with some hope to finish all during the weekend

I own just as many disks, but I'm referring to the Seagate as a brand being unreliable, proven by numerous people including myself (6 failed disks in 5 months, all under 2 months in age). Samsung are the only drives I will trust with such capacity and my data.

Ouch. Don't blame you for RAID1'ing those drives. They're pretty unreliable buggers.

Not true.
I own 5 discs (4x 1.5tb and 1x 1tb) and the 1tb already works perfectly for 2 years and the 1.5tb for 1 year.

Desktop: Samsung 400GB (Died a couple of days ago)
Laptop: Western Digital 140GB

External: Western Digital 1TB

I've still yet to fill the 1TB and I've had it for a year plus now. At time of writing, I've only used 386GB and I'm currently on a torrenting rampage.

Each image has a number, the images in question are numbered 648 - 670.

Edit: Well, every resource inside the PE executable has a number; this includes any type of file embedded into the PE exe, could be XML, PNG or even a Word document I guess.
