It's already leaked, don't think I can link you though but just search around for "Battlefield.4.Alpha.Trial-3DM".
PC version btw, not sure if its the same build # as the 360 partnernet one but it's using the same codename "WarsawAlphaTrial"
Also found the string "https://alpha-stest.battlelog.com" in the exe, doesn't seem to connect but it looks like "beta-stest.battlelog.com" exists too
Edit: looks like PC version is build 1303796, couldn't see any build number in the 360 version though

I have a compaq presario 7170 with a voice/fax/modem. The computer
came with some TAPI software from compaq to run an answering machine,
a speaker phone and fax.

Would be talking about the right era as well so this may be a point in the right direction, I'll see if I can find the software as a driver for that machine on HP's site.

EDIT: Seems like it's called Compaq Mediapilot, I'm going to try and grab a copy and see if it looks right in a 95 VM. However the closest I'm finding is patches for it from HP http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=96402&prodNameId=239480&swEnvOID=19&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=33720

I'm guessing the best chance of finding it is if someone has or had a Compaq Presario circa 1996 with a voicemodem, and still has an original install or the recovery disks for it. No where I can find has the software so the recovery disks may be the only place to get it.

Just that I would hate to lose you from the project completely, given your research, knowledge, and contributions.
I would rather not be involved.

If any Windows 9x specific issues or questions arise during your project, I will be happy to answer them or try to help if I have any knowledge about the subject, but beyond that I really do not have the time.

There is a torrent out there from a few years ago that had Windows 99. It's essentially an ISO with some extra software on it and maybe some preapplied reg-tweaks. I have the documents downloaded from the torrent, but not the ISO as there is no seeders.

Wouldn't using virtual machines defeat the authenticity of this test, since they would remove almost all of the difficulties with incompatible hardware?As long as the names of the virtual machines are not mentioned with the operating systems being tested, then no, especially since many of them (such as Virtual PC) emulate certain hardware (such as video adaptors) that are similar to what was available at the time.

However, people may test on real hardware from the same time period if they choose. And we will also likewise be testing on different emulated setups, at least for the different architectures that Windows NT had, not to mention that QEMU emulates quite a lot of different hardware that would have been available at the time.

Congrats on proving you are not a developer.

We'll not see for certain til we get a build with these changes, but it simply could not work like that. I'm not entirely convinced by the idea they'll simply bring back the legacy code either. It was absurdly inefficient - by Windows 7, it was actually drawing the entire button twice. Just set the Start Button to a semi-transparent image and see for yourself as you have a smaller, broken start button in the background drawn over by one that works.

Of course, technically speaking, the start button didn't exist in Vista and 7. There was a Start Window instead.I never said that I knew otherwise for sure, so I'm not sure how you missed that...
I mean, it's possible that they changed the code to make it appear visible at all times, but it still wouldn't be the old code from Windows 7 at all (at least not as far as I know).However, I do agree that the old code obviously wouldn't be returning, and for the reasons that you mentioned above.Why quibble over semantics, Jesus Christ The problem here is that people have a tendency to judge everything based on appearance, rather than the way that it actually works. The reason for the length is it's the only thing that stops spam bots dead in their tracks, because they're not programmed with a password this long. Plain and simple. My advice is just use a shorter password but type it twice. Easy peasy.

I also wish to be removed. While I find this project an "interesting idea," I certainly do not have the time to devote to such a project.

To make anything useful of this, you would need to have a group of volunteers who basically have "time to waste" (and I don't really mean that it a bad way) to do the experimenting. And what "experimenting" is there to do even? So we install Betas. What is there to do with/to them at that point? Unless you have multiple configurations of period hardware to test, or want to spend further time installing and playing with period software on each and every installation, then essentially all you can say is:

"I installed Windows Beta version xxx. It installs properly on xxx hardware, or it fails to install on xxx hardware because of xxx bug..."Well, my idea is to examine each and every feature as much as possible, as well as to provide as much detailed information relating to the development of operating systems.

Just because someone is listed as a project leader, doesn't necessarily mean that they will always have the time. I understand completely that people might not always have the time for the project itself. What I am asking is that they at least try once they have the time to themselves. So if you don't have the time, then you can remain in the project sporadically if you want (as in, only occasionally posting articles relating to the builds themselves).

It's not a theme, get that through your head.

No, it's a different image from the one used in Windows 8, but it's function is the same as it was before; to bring up the start screen when clicked. So no, it's not a 'theme', it's an image similar to the one used in previous versions of Windows to display the old start menu. Big deal.

I have a full beta of tombraider 1 for psx tested in July 96, got it from a page that I found by chance, this happened two years ago and is not possible to finish the game since the sanctuary of the scion level does not load completely, although the beta if you have all levels, something very rare that this same beta acquired it by 2000 when still it was possible to buy easily psx games, which was able to complete up to the last level, only that I did not know that the game that I bought was a beta version, which at that time I did not know what were the beta versions, was the first tombraider 1 that I bought after tombraider 2 and 3. Then I went back to buy the game but something different already noticing that in the choice of the mansion he said larashome and in the first game, said Gym
I also have a demo e3 of tomb raider psx (vilcabamba level) and a demo of sega saturn.
Tombraider 2 I have two betas, one PC (three levels) and (complete) psx
Tombraider 3 only have the demos (PC) india and area 51 (psx)
Tombraider 4 I have a version of times level playable in psx (apparently is a cancelled version that lacks sound and does not bring the video stream) and beta tomb raider 5 psx.
Now tell me whats your plan of negotiating that I have seen that of tombraider 1 there are several betas, especially one that dates back to 95 which is surely the most ancient.
I am also looking for the beta of twisted metal 4 for psx

Also, I'm really discussing this from a usability standpoint. He just wanted to know whether it was possible, that's all. Not to backseat moderate or anything, but I don't see why you should just post things like "Google is your friend", because you don't know whether he tried searching, and didn't find anything.

To answer the original poster's question: I'm not sure whether it's possible, although I remember that even as recently as the Release Preview, Aero Glass was still present, and I also remember someone enabling the Glass effect in Aero Lite in one of the pre-release builds, but it was quite a while ago.

Most likely, someone such as hounsell or smorgan would know the answer to this, since they probably know much more about how the theme service works than I do, I'm sure (at least hounsell does). However, I haven't even asked them, let alone tried this myself, since it's not really a feature change (in my opinion), but if you're interested, you could try asking them yourself.

To make anything useful of this, you would need to have a group of volunteers who basically have "time to waste" (and I don't really mean that it a bad way) to do the experimenting. And what "experimenting" is there to do even? So we install Betas. What is there to do with/to them at that point? Unless you have multiple configurations of period hardware to test, or want to spend further time installing and playing with period software on each and every installation, then essentially all you can say is:

"I installed Windows Beta version xxx. It installs properly on xxx hardware, or it fails to install on xxx hardware because of xxx bug..."Well, my idea is to examine each and every feature as much as possible, as well as to provide as much detailed information relating to the development of operating systems.

Just because someone is listed as a project leader, doesn't necessarily mean that they will always have the time. I understand completely that people might not always have the time for the project itself. What I am asking is that they at least try once they have the time to themselves. So if you don't have the time, then you can remain in the project sporadically if you want (as in, only occasionally posting articles relating to the builds themselves).

Still, though, it's your own choice, but since I have been able to make a proper reply, I will give you the choice as to whether you want to stay and work with the project on certain occasions, or whether you would rather not participate. Virtual machines may be used, since it's much more convenient for most of the people here (relatively few of whom have proper access to hardware from the same period or earlier). However, the names of the virtualization packages may not be mentioned with the operating systems themselves unless they are about the same age of the builds being tested or earlier (this also includes any features that were not developed until the builds being tested were already out of date).

It's not a theme, get that through your head.But it has the same purpose, so what's the difference feature-wise? Sorry, but I don't understand how this is enough of a change to count as being a "feature".

I mean, they both bring the user back to the Start screen, as well as appear within the list of apps running. What's the difference apart from being visible at all times while on the desktop (unless the latter is what you're referring to)?

Also, could you please provide a proper reason for it being much more than just a theme, and not just posting generic comments such as "It's more than a theme"? As in, not just a mere opinion, but something to actually back it up with proper evidence?

OS/2 is certainly worth the effort for any computer history buff. There's a fair amount of interesting software that was once available for it (some of which is now available for free via the Hobbes FTP server and others available "elsewhere"). Interestingly, I've also found that OS/2 in Virtualbox is actually one of the best ways to run Win16 and DOS apps on modern systems. The only hangup is that you can't install the guest additions on a Vanilla Warp 4 installation, you need to get FixPack 15 (the last freely downloadable FixPack) up and running first. Warp 4.52 is essentially Warp 4 plus the latest OS FixPack (17 or something), plus a newer version of the TCP/IP stack and a bunch of drivers. eComStation builds on 4.52 with more new drivers, an even newer TCP/IP stack plus some graphical updates. eCS is a bit pricey ($150 for the personal use version, more for the business use edition) and includes a lot of stuff like ports of OpenOffice and Firefox that aren't too useful for retrocomputing purposes, but there is a free "live CD" demo that offers a good way to test for hardware compatibility and if you want a "universal retrocomputing client OS", you really can't do any better.

shsxs.dll was only accessible via the Windows team at the time, likely added once the user is authenticated on the domain. It wasn't until late M3 80xx that it was included in partner builds.

Virtual PC 2007 simply doesn't support x64 guests.

This is because Virtual PC hasn't been updated significantly since MS released Virtual PC 2004.

1. Sheepshaver does not emulate a graphics accelerator.
2. It's PowerPC JIT emulator still had lots of unfixed bugs that make it easier to crash.
3. Sheepshaver's Sound Manager implementation is a hack based on Basilisk II's and sometimes very unstable.
Why don't just run the Windows version of Carmageddon 2?

For some reasons, Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 doesn't recognize my x64 processor, that makes the Windows Live CD stop booting with a "Windows failed to start" error. VMware works fine with it.

Maybe you did not enable VT-X/AMD-V Acceleration.

Anyway, I think that if you find the correct balance between roleplay and actual research this project might be successful.

Beware striving too much for historical accuracy can be counterproductive.
In fact a Microsoft beta tester wouldn't go much beyond testing hardware compatibility and spotting bugs, that's what they're required to do.

If you want to do in depth research, you'd better roleplaying a reverse engineer.
This could be done at various levels, from the implementation details to the requirements analysis.
However it would be even more time consuming and it would require way more skills.

In a few words, simulating the actual testing process would be pointless.
Don't get too much into the role of beta tester and try instead to understand what was happening during the development process.

They would just get stuck to the bootup screen (finder logo with the bar). I left it alone for 2 hours and even then it did not load. It was a known-good iso I was installing it from... The ROM was good too. You don't need to help me though, as it's not that important

Sheepshaver itself is most likely the problem, as Bender said. It sometimes even refuses to load the os at all on some of my machines. Even when everything is set up properly.
